Andrea Kassens

Andrea Kassens explores the relationship between inner world, perception, and space in her images. In multilayered, sometimes fragmented interiors, she stages female figures who are at once present and withdrawn as if they are moving in an in-between state. Photographic references, her own shots, and spontaneous sketches serve as raw material, which she painterly overlays, shifts, and breaks. Through these overlays, image spaces arise that cannot be clearly tied to a single reality, but rather exist in a suspended state between observation, memory, and imagination. A defining feature of her recent works is the experimental handling of color and light. Kassens employs intense, luminous color that gives the scenes an emotional  temperature and extends far beyond mere decorative effect. Colors engage in dialogue with one another: sometimes in harmony, sometimes in deliberate friction. The strong contrasts create tensions, direct the gaze, and forge an atmosphere reminiscent of cinematic lighting. Reflections, distortions, and  cinematic lighting effects transform ordinary rooms into subjectively charged visual worlds, where reality and projection blend into one another. Content-wise, Kassens’s images circle around what happens between figures, spaces, and inner states. There are rarely clear actions, but rather moments of in-between: a gaze that loses itself; a gesture that hints at something; a space that tells us more about the figure than the figure herself does. Her works examine how the inner and outer can merge: what becomes perceptible when a figure stands in a room, and what remains hidden from direct view. The female figure, central in her early works, becomes part of a larger network in which atmosphere, color, and composition are as significant as the person depicted. With her photographic sensitivity, her works feel familiar yet carry a subtle strangeness. They invite viewers to linger, to discover the layers, and to project their own imagination into open narrative spaces that she intentionally leaves  undefined.
